Austin Getaway (by Ramona)

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Well, Nat and I are back from our weekend getaway.  :)   It was a nice time for Nat and I to spend time together alone while my parents watched Sean for us.  I must say, it was very nice just to have the two us to go and do whatever we wanted and not worrying about Sean and his schedule.  On the other hand, Nat and I both missed Sean at various points of our getaway.

On Friday, we flew out before Sean woke up, and we landed in Austin around lunch.  We headed over to Trudy’s for lunch with my friend Mehvash.  After lunch, Nat and I headed to the mall so that I could look for some shoes.  I was unsuccessful, but it was nice to walk inside because it had be sprinkling since we arrived.  We headed over to the church I used to go to in college.  They had changed buildings the last year I was there, so we visited the “new” site.  There was an event going on and the doors to the buildings were locked, so I couldn’t take Nat inside.  :P   Afterwards, we headed to Mozart’s coffee shop by Lake Austin and sat on the patio to relax a little bit.  We headed back to the hotel to rest before we met up with Wei, John, and Michelle for dinner.  Before dinner, I took Nat to the Capital and we walked around before heading to Hoovers for dinner. Nat and I were still full from lunch, but John raved about the great Southern cooking at Hoovers, so we managed to stuff ourselves full with queso, ribs, country fried steak, and some good sides.  We washed down the meal with some sweet tea and lemonade.  Needless to say, we couldn’t have any dessert, though next time we will definitely be trying the cobblers.  :)   John and Michelle went home after dinner, and we went over to Wei’s house to hangout.  It was a good time of catching up with each other and praying for one another.  I forget how much I miss Wei!

We got home late on Friday, so we thought that we would sleep in on Saturday.  Much to both of our surprise, we were up and ready to go at 7AM.  After we worked out and showered, we headed to Juan in a Million.  It was packed with so many people.  It is a favorite among locals and students and seeing how it was Saturday closed to 11AM, it was no suprise that there was a wait.  Fortunately, they are pretty quick at getting food out on the table, so we waited no longer than 15 minutes.  Nat got the famous Juan in a Million breakfast taco (most people need 2-3 tortillas to finish all the filling), and I got 2 other breakfast tacos.  Again, we were completely stuffed.

We headed toward campus to walk off some of the calories.  I showed around, pointing out certain buildings and memories I had of campus.  It was strange for me to be on campus because I didn’t remember any of the street names, but as soon as I was there, I knew where to go.  Campus has changed a lot long since I last went in 2004.  They have added quite a few buildings and are continuing to tear down and build new buildings.  I guess this is typical for college campuses that are in cities and have no more land to expand.  We went to the bookstore to get some UT gear for our parents and our sons.  It was pretty fun to see all that burnt orange again.  :)

After campus, we went to the spa to get our treatments.  :)   Nat had some time in the sauna, a massage, and a scalp massage.  I got a light exfoliation, massage, and pedicure.  We were both VERY relaxed after our treatments.  I wish I could get massages more often!  The spa was close to a favorite bakery of mine, Upper Crust, so we drove over to have an afternoon snack.  We headed back to the hotel to rest before going out to a nice restaurant for dinner.

We left around 6PM for dinner at Uchi.  We had heard it was very popular and very good, but they didn’t take reservations.  We were shocked to find out that there was almost a 2 hour wait for dinner at 6:30PM.  We changed our plans and headed to Kenichi (thanks John for the suggestion) in downtown for dinner.  I had forgotten how much of a pain it is to park in downtown Austin, so we had to drive around for awhile before we found a spot.  Fortunately, it was close to the restaurant.  We dined on some lovely fresh fish.  We were stuffed after dinner (do you sense a theme here?).  We didn’t want to get a big dessert, so I took Nat to Amy’s Ice Cream.  We were so tired after getting ice cream that we took the ice cream back to the hotel to eat.  We relaxed, packed, and headed to bed.

This morning, we woke up early again (without the alarm).  We packed and got ready to leave for the airport.  I felt hungry in the morning, so I asked Nat if he thought we had enough time to grab some more breakfast tacos from Juan in a Million.  It was close, but in the end I ordered it to be picked up and we were able to make it to our gate with 20 minutes to spare!  (I love how the rental cars in Austin are right across the terminal).  Our flight to Chicago was good except that we had to circle for 30 minutes due to some thunderstorms in Chicago.  When we landed, we saw that many flights were delayed and some even cancelled.  Our flight seemed to be on time, but Nat felt that we were going to feel the effects of the storm with our flight.  Boy, was Nat right!  Our flight got cancelled, and we were booked on the 6:30PM flight.  I wanted to go home to see Sean and my mom, so we decided to rent a car and drive home.  Unforunately, our airline does not reimburse us for the car since the cancellation was due to weather.

We arrived home shortly before 5PM.  It was so great to see Sean.  He smiled at us as if to say, “Is this really mom and dad?”  After a few minutes, he wanted us to follow us around as he pulled our luggage around.  It was a great reunion!  We are so glad to be back!

Boy oh Boy (by Ramona)

We are expecting another boy at the end of August.  :)   Surprise!  We found out in the middle of January that I was pregnant.  Our whole family had a bout with the stomach flu, and I was still feeling nauseous a week after I got the flu.  What made us finally get a test was 1)  I hadn’t had a period since I stopped the pill, which was about 6 weeks (granted, I had been irregular after I stopped breastfeeding)  2)  I was nauseous and craving cheeseburgers.  Nat didn’t believe that I was pregnant, but he conceded in getting a test for me.  When I took it, it came out positive, so here we are, at about 20 weeks.

The first trimester of pregnancy has definitely harder on me than with Sean.  I felt nauseous from about 3PM-10PM, and I really didn’t want to eat.  It was harder for me this time around because I had Sean to take care of.  When I was pregnant with Sean, I could just nap whenever I wanted or eat whatever and whenever I wanted.  But having Sean, I felt that I needed to still provide relatively healthy meals.  Being nauseous and making food was not a good or easy combination for me.  Fortunately, Nat was kind enough to cook at times, and he would go grab the latest crave I had for dinner.  Usually these were just cravings of things that I knew I could stomach and not feel queasy while eating. I spent a lot of time napping and laying on the couch for the first 14 weeks.   I felt bad for Nat because when he came home, he always saw me feeling sick on the couch.  He just wanted to know I was happy to see him, and I was, but it was very hard to express since he came home when my sickness was at its worst!

After about the 14th week, I started feeling better.  We had a sonogram at 14 weeks to date the baby.  Then, later that week, Sean and I traveled down to Houston.  Fortunately, it was around the time I left that I started feeling less nauseous.  I still felt tired, but I took tired over tired plus nausea.  I was grateful to have the help of my family to take care of Sean and just being taken care of myself.  It was also around 14 weeks (maybe a week or two earlier) that I started getting my pooch.  The doctor told me that I would start showing sooner, and he was right.

So now, I’m about 20 weeks, and our due date is August 30th which is basically 2 years and a month after Sean’s birthday.  I decided when we found out that we were pregnant that we’d do things the “opposite” than what we did with the first.  We really aren’t announcing (except this post) that we’re pregnant.  We have told a few close friends and family, but that’s about it.  Part of me just wants people to wonder at my growing belly and then figure it out on their own.  My friend calls me passive aggressive, I just call it “surprise!”.  :)   I also decided to find out the sex of the baby.  When we had our 18 week sonogram, we clearly saw the boy parts.  I’m outnumbered three to one.  Pray for me. :)

Whew, Nat and I are pooped after a very busy but fun Easter.  We both didn’t sleep very well last night, so it made us even more tired for today!  We woke up later than we wanted, and as soon as we were up, we were busy busy busy!  I got up to make a breakfast casserole for our church’s Easter breakfast, and Nat took care of Sean by feeding him breakfast.  Then in a span of 45 minutes, we both showered, ironed clothes, and got ready for church.  We had a great time a breakfast at church.  To add to the excitement of Easter, the fire alarm went off at church right after breakfast.  Service started about 15 minutes later, but it didn’t seem to damper anyone’s spirits.

After service, we went home and fed Sean lunch.  We rested a little bit before we headed over to Mr. and Mrs. F’s for Easter dinner.  Mr. and Mrs. F and their family host a lot of young singles for Easter dinner (well, really late lunch), and it never disappoints.  Let me see if I can remember what she cooked–ham, lamb, rolls, salad, peas, carrots, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, asparagus.  For dessert, she made strawberry pie (two of them), a black forrest cake, and a meyer lemon cheesecake.  Let me say, everyone was stuffed!  It was a great time for us to hangout with our friends and see the F family since we haven’t seen them for quite some time.  Sean did a fabulous job at taking a nap at their house.  Usually, he’s not a big fan of his Pack N’ Play, so he cries for some time when we put him down.  We were pleasantly surprised that he went down and fell asleep right away and stayed asleep for a couple of hours.  He woke up just in time for dessert (well, he didn’t get dessert, but he got to play and have a granola bar).  :)

Afterwards, we headed back home to rest a little bit.  We packed up some games and Sean’s gears and headed out to Mr. and Mrs. S’s house to hangout.  :)   Mr. and Mrs. S were at the F’s for Easter dinner, so we were all stuffed.  We talked for a little bit, and started playing a board game.  We did eventually get around to a “light” dinner of pizza and pasta salad.  Nat and I took turns playing while the other watched Sean.  He did pretty well at the S’s, but he got cranky towards the end of our game b/c it was bedtime.

Now, we’re home, Sean’s in bed, and I am ready just to veg out for the rest of the night before bed!

GTT – Gone to Texas (by Ramona)

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Nat and I are going to spend a weekend in Texas WITHOUT SEAN! :)   It’s my birthday present from my parents.  They are coming out for a week, and my mom and dad will take care of Sean while we’re in Austin.  The possibilities are endless without having to work around Sean’s schedule.  We can stay up late (though Nat and I both laughed/agreed we probably couldn’t make it much past 11PM), wake up late, and go out when it’s normally naptime.

I know, some of you maybe surprised by our choice of cities.  I wanted to go someplace that wasn’t driving distance but wasn’t too far, warm, and had good food.   We narrowed it down to LA and Austin.  I picked Austin because I’m more familiar with it since I went there for undergrad and I didn’t want to be stressed about finding all these places to see and eat at.  Nat hasn’t been there before, and I figure it would be a great opportunity to get some more UT gear for the family.  :)

Thanks mom and dad for making this trip possible!
